Alumni & Friends of the School of International Arbitration
Since its foundation over 25 years ago, the School of International Arbitration at Queen Mary University of London (SIA) has promoted the law and practice of international arbitration via its teaching and research and firmly established itself as a leading contributor to the to the science of international arbitration and litigation.
During this time, more than 2,000 students from over 80 countries all over the world have successfully completed courses organised by the SIA as part of their LL.M., postgraduate or distance learning programmes or have undertaken MPhil/Phd research at the School. Through the SIA's excellent contacts with the academic world and legal practice in all its forms, many others have been closely involved with the SIA's activities in different capacities.
The AFSIA was founded in June 2008 with the objective to bring all of these people together, to allow them to keep in touch with each other and the SIA and to thus create an invaluable network of people involved in the field of arbitration at every level and in every part of the world. To celebrate its inauguration, a successful inaugural conference on issues of enforcement of arbitral awards was held in London on 3 December 2008.
The AFSIA is led by a global Steering Committee consisting of six members. In order to increase its global presence on strong national foundations and encourage closer links between members at a local level, National Committees have been set up in various jurisdictions, with contacts for other organisations pending.
AFSIA strives to grow as an independent organization with close links to the SIA and the CCLS, providing a network for academics and practitioners involved in arbitration, that does justice to the SIA’s excellent reputation in the field.
